ST ALBANS

St Albans District Council Sends Strong Warning to Food Business Operators After Successful Prosecution

St Albans District Council has issued a stark warning to all food business operators after securing a prosecution against the operator of a Redbourn burger restaurant for failing to register as required by food safety regulations.

The case began when the Council’s environmental health team investigated Total Cow following a customer complaint. Their enquiries uncovered that the business had never registered—a serious breach of food safety law. Despite being given an opportunity to accept a formal caution, the operator refused, prompting the Council to prosecute.

At St Albans Magistrates Court, the operator admitted the offence and received a 12-month conditional discharge. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £26 and contribute £500 towards the Council’s legal costs.

St Albans District Council is clear: those who attempt to sidestep the rules will be found out and held accountable. This prosecution should serve as a powerful reminder to all food business operators—compliance with food safety regulations is not optional. The Council remains vigilant in protecting public health and will not hesitate to take action against those who fail to meet their legal obligations.
