News at a Glance

🚶‍♂️🚴 Jarman Park gets major walking and cycling upgrade

Hertfordshire County Council is rolling out the next phase of safer walking and cycling routes around Jarman Park in Hemel Hempstead.
The work builds on the recently completed A414 St Albans Road toucan crossing.
Improvements include new toucan crossings and a widened shared path between Jarman Way and Bennetts End Road.
Works run from 19 January to the end of May, weather permitting.

St Albans residents can apply for cross-pavement EV charging licences

Residents can now apply for a licence to safely run EV charging cables across pavements from their homes, allowing access to cheaper domestic electricity tariffs.

The pilot scheme is being run by Hertfordshire County Council in partnership with St Albans District Council.

The county is also rolling out thousands of new public charge points across Hertfordshire, backed by £6m in Government funding.

Valentine’s light display coming to St Albans Clock Tower

St Albans City Centre BID will illuminate the historic Clock Tower with a special Valentine’s light show from 12–14 February, running each evening from 5.30pm to 9.30pm.

The city centre will also feature Valentine-themed décor, including a glowing LOVE installation and festoon lighting across key streets throughout February.

🏠 Broxbourne responds as landlords quit the rental market

Broxbourne Council has issued a statement after complaints from landlords about rising pressures in the private rented sector.
Some landlords are leaving, but the council says this reflects individual circumstances rather than local policy.
Its expanded Simple Lets scheme now offers rent guarantee help and free property inspections.

Three Rivers has launched a consultation on extending a parish boundary into an unparished area.
If approved, local residents would gain parish-level representation for the first time.
Parish councils play a key role in local decision-making and community services.

⚠️ Welwyn Hatfield coalition in turmoil over election delay

Labour cabinet members pushed through a recommendation to postpone May’s elections despite opposition from most councillors.
Lib Dems say the move betrays democracy and threatens the coalition.
Labour argues the delay is needed because of pressures from local government reorganisation.
The final decision now rests with Government ministers.

🏙️ North Herts launches big consultation on town centres

North Herts Council wants views on a new strategy for Hitchin, Letchworth, Royston and Baldock.
The plan aims to keep town centres vibrant, distinctive and sustainable.
Feedback will shape future regeneration, investment and development priorities.

🏘️ Hertsmere buys homes and historic pub to tackle housing crisis

Hertsmere has taken ownership of the former White Hart pub in South Mimms for a future Community and Tech Hub.
The council is also buying three homes to provide temporary accommodation for families in need.
Around 40% of the costs will be covered by a Government housing grant.
Leaders say the move will cut costs and increase social housing supply.

💷 Hertsmere unveils balanced budget with £600k boost

Hertsmere says its 2026/27 budget is fully funded thanks to a favourable Government settlement.
The council will invest an extra £0.6m in frontline services from April.
Money will go to street cleaning, enforcement, film investment and deprived wards.
The budget will now go out to public consultation.

🏛️ Herts sets aside £10m for local government reorganisation

Hertfordshire County Council has earmarked £10m to help manage local government reorganisation.
The total transition cost could reach around £50m by 2028.
The draft budget also includes £55m in savings and a 4.99% council tax rise.
Final approval is expected on 17 February.

🗳️ Most Herts councils reject call to delay May elections

Four of six councils due to hold elections want the vote to go ahead.
Broxbourne, St Albans, Three Rivers and Watford oppose postponement.
Stevenage and Welwyn Hatfield have requested a one-year delay.
Ministers will make the final decision.

🚗 East Herts cracks down on ‘Wild West’ parking

East Herts has approved tougher parking rules across the district.
Changes include higher charges, longer paid hours and a three-hour Blue Badge limit.
Some increases were softened after public consultation.
The council says the reforms will improve fairness and availability.

📱 East Herts adopts one-app parking system

East Herts has gone live on the National Parking Platform.
Drivers can now use any major parking app across all council car parks.
The move removes the need to download multiple apps.
The council says it will make parking simpler and more flexible.
