Good morning and HapPy Friday!

🎉 Bank Holiday Weekend in Hertfordshire 🎉

The Bank Holiday is here and Hertfordshire is bursting with things to do! For those celebrating amazing GCSE results, you’ve got even more reason to make this weekend one to remember.

We’ve rounded up the very best events happening across the county. If it’s not in this list, it’s probably not worth losing sleep over! This time, we’ve gone the extra mile to uncover some of Hertfordshire’s hidden gems alongside the headline acts so you won’t miss a thing.

Not a fan of reptiles? Maybe give the zoo a pass unless you’re ready to conquer that phobia, in which case Hertfordshire Zoo has something just for you. For classic car lovers, Knebworth House is revving up with a spectacular motor show, while the immersive Colourscape experience in Watford promises a feast for the senses. Personally, I might just see you wandering through those colours this weekend.

💡 Did we miss an event? Tell us! Together we’ll make sure Hertfordshire’s best weekends always stay on the map.

PHOTPGRAPHY CHALLENGE

Hertfordshire Towns and Villages

We’re inviting residents across Hertfordshire to help capture the spirit of our towns and villages, old and new. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, your photos will help shape the Hertfordshire History Booklet Series, a community-made collection celebrating how our places looked then and how they look now.

What to shoot

  • Landmarks (churches, bridges, markets, stations, high streets)

  • Heritage sites & historic buildings

  • Modern architecture & public art

  • Parks, rivers, commons, canals, nature spots

  • Then/Now pairings (archival re-creation welcome!)

How to take part

  1. Take clear, high-resolution photos (phone or camera is fine, aim for 3000px on the long edge if possible).

  2. Tell us the story: include location, date taken, and 1–2 sentences about why it matters.

  3. Credit details: your name (as you’d like it printed) and your town/village.

  4. File naming: Place_Landmark_YourName_YYYYMMDD.jpg (e.g., StAlbans_ClockTower_JSmith_20250823.jpg).

  5. Optional: include a matching “Then” image (with source/permission) for side-by-side comparison.

Permissions & usage

By submitting, you confirm you own the image and grant us permission to publish it (print & digital) in the Hertfordshire History Booklet Series and related promotions. We’ll always credit the photographer.

Tips for standout shots

  • Shoot in daylight or golden hour; keep horizons straight.

  • Include a person for scale if it adds context (get their permission).

  • Compose with leading lines and foreground interest; avoid heavy filters.

Why join?

  • Showcase your work to a county-wide audience

  • Help preserve local history for future generations

  • Be featured (with credit) in a proudly Hertfordshire publication
